Ancient manuscripts speak of times of woe and turmoil, of great battles, of unspeakable evils. They tell of foes that rise up from the scarred depths of the earth, shambling horrors and animated carcasses, the dead that walk the earth.
The Elves in their lush green forests and the Dwarves in their cavernous mountains did perceive this evil, and, recognising the peril that did threaten their very existence, did they set aside their enmity and hasten did they to arms.
A mighty host marched for the gates of Andra-Regis and at its head a dark Lord and his sinister henchmen. Much destruction had they wrought and many had they slain, but from the ranks of the defenders of light emerged the power to quell the dark rising and restore peace to the world. On the plains by the town of Freiwald, overlooked by Castle Lyrne, did the combined armies of Elven, Dwarven, Gnomish and Humankind oppose the dark Lord's host. Battle ensued and the tide of darkness was turned, its fallen lord borne away upon the back of a winged beast.

Ancient legends, long forgotten or remaining solely as fairytales and myths... But 'lo! Hearken now, children of Varholm lest thou shalt fall prey to darkness. For even now do the minions of The Evil One stir. Ere the turning of seasons must blades be sharpened, must armour be wrought and must bows be drawn. Rally the Kingdoms of the world lest evil consumeth all.

The kingdoms of men are prosperous and great are their assets. Peace reigns in all the land and Elves, Dwarves, Humans and Gnomes dwell together in relative harmony.
Disquieting rumours however circulate amongst the citizens of Freiwald and Andra-Regis and the plains of woe once more bear witness to horrors beyond imagination. For twisted, shambling forms in various states of decay have again been sighted in the realms of men.
